Transitioning between a structured environment to one where you are completely on your own is both exhilarating and scary, and you’re certainly not alone in that sentiment. Just remember, the really hard part is behind you. You might be wondering how to enjoy life sober without drugs or alcohol. The truth is, the possibilities are endless.

As time goes by, your outlook will change, a positive self-image will emerge, and you’ll discover what truly makes you happy. Rediscover Things You Used To Love

Think about the days before drugs and alcohol took over. Were there things that really ignited your spark? Did you enjoy making art of some kind? Were you into competitive sports? Did you ride horses? Were you passionate about anything at all? If the answer is yes, why not try to rediscover those things about yourself that you left behind? After all, they are still there, and you are still you. Perhaps you can pick up where you left off.

Be Of Service To Others

You’ll hear this often in the program: being of service to others is one of the most gratifying experiences you can have, inside or outside of recovery. Putting a smile on another’s face or helping out someone who is in need is simply good for the soul. Seek out something that will help your community. Volunteer at a local shelter or hospice, help an elderly neighbor with their groceries. There are many options for you to help put some goodwill back into the world.

Are there things you’ve always wanted to do but never got around to, such as joining a community theater group or taking up a hobby? Don’t be afraid to try something that’s out of your comfort zone. You’ll never know how satisfying it is to challenge yourself until you give it a try.

Get Moving

There’s nothing better for body and soul than a good physical workout. Join a gym, start running or jogging, take up tennis, dust off your bicycle or your roller blades and get that blood pumping. Even something as simple as a walk in the morning can do wonders for your outlook and motivation—and, you can always do it with a friend.

Get Spiritual

Although there is a religious/spiritual side to the 12-step program of AA, it may not be the complete picture for you. Do you feel that you have a spiritual connection to any one church or faith? Reach out to a group in your area, something that fills your heart with joy. The ability to connect with a higher power is very helpful in recovery, and it may bring important insights and joy into your day-to-day life as well. If you don’t have a faith, per se, consider spending some time each day in meditation.

Write A Journal
