5 Ideas for New Year’s Resolutions in Recovery

It’s that time of year again when everyone reviews their year and plans to do something better. This is a great opportunity for anyone on a self-improvement journey, but it is especially fantastic for those working on sobriety and rebuilding their lives. How to Add a New Habit to Your Life

Adding a habit is easier than changing an old one. For example, if you aim to get to a healthier weight, you should add more nutritious foods rather than restrict yourself. See how you can turn your New Year resolution into an action rather than an inaction.

Another way to achieve new habits is to habit-stack. For example, if you want to drink more water, you might drink a glass every time you eat a meal and during your morning routine rather than filling up a bottle and hoping you will remember to finish it.

Some other ways to achieve goals are:

  • Break larger goals into smaller, manageable steps.
  • Set SMART goals, ones that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
  • Track your progress and celebrate milestones.

Idea 1. Prioritize Your Mental and Physical Health

Substance use can damage physical and mental health, so improving it this New Year is a good idea. Set goals to move more, take walks in nature, try a meditation practice, or intentionally feed your body healthy foods.

Idea 2. Strengthen Your Support System

You could plan to add another support group to your roster or make new friends with a new hobby. If you have little support, try reaching out to a therapist, AA, or reconnecting with old friends who add positivity to your life. Surrounding yourself with supportive people can make all the difference for long-term sobriety.

Idea 3. Volunteer and Give Back

Giving back can help you feel positive about yourself and your impact on the world. By staying busy you can keep your mind away from negative thoughts, and make new friends. Whether it’s at a food bank, animal shelter, or community center, volunteering can make a change in your life and the lives of others. Or perhaps you can offer to speak at meetings about your recovery journey, sharing your story can inspire others.

Idea 4. Focus on Gratitude and Reflection

Start keeping a gratitude journal in which you write down your achievements. By focusing on the positive things you are doing, you can gain a clearer picture of the impact you are making in your life and the lives of others. You can use this journal to reflect on your progress and celebrate your successes.

Idea 5. Achieve Sobriety

Perhaps you are still struggling with your journey to a healthier lifestyle and find yourself relapsing or unable to achieve sobriety. If this is the case for you, a fresh start in a rehab or sober living home like our one here in Charleston, SC, can help you start your New Year off on the right foot.
