Getting sober isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s a daily endeavor that we must make an effort to achieve and maintain. But we’re all human, after all, and some days are more difficult than others. On these days, it might be difficult to find the motivation to carry on. If you’re feeling this way and are struggling to maintain your sobriety, you’re not alone. Keep in mind that it’s not easy to get sober—yet here you are. You couldn’t have come this far without strength, courage and faith. Here are some tips for maintaining motivation for recovery from addiction.
Lack Of Motivation Could Lead To Relapse
Addicts and alcoholics run the risk of relapse if they allow themselves to remain unmotivated for any length of time. But what is motivation, exactly? Motivation is an idea, a person, or some kind of goal that influences how you think and act. Specific motivation for recovery from addiction is likely different for each and every addict, but could include:
- Repairing your relationships with friends, colleagues and loved ones
- Feeling good, energized and healthy
- Getting ahead at work or school
- Learning to enjoy life without the burden of addictions
These are just a few ways some addicts stay motivated. For you, it could mean something else. Maybe regaining custody of your children is a major motivator for you—or maybe it’s getting your driver’s license back or showing your spouse that you can be trusted.
Start by writing down your motivations for recovery from addiction and try to outline the little steps you need to take in order to help them manifest. When you’re able to meet the small steps that add up to the larger goal, you’ll feel like you’re accomplishing something toward that end result. Giving yourself credit for these small victories might make the process seem not quite as overwhelming.
Things You Can Do Today To Boost Your Motivation
Even though we have the tools to change the way things are, there are times we just don’t feel like using them. If you’re having trouble with the “one day at a time” mentality, shorten your time frame. Taking it “five minutes at a time” might be more achievable. Stay focused on all the good things that you have gained in sobriety rather than obsessing on what you have lost. Here are some things you can do to help maintain your motivation for recovery from addiction:
- Get outside and get some exercise
- Get plenty of sleep
- Eat healthy, nourishing foods
- Drink lots of water to stay hydrated
- Surround yourself with positive people who inspire you, and people who like you for who you are
- Take up some healthy pastimes like yoga, cycling or swimming
- Keep your home and workplace organized to relieve anxiety
- Connect with your higher power
- Be of service to others—volunteering your time to a person in need or a cause close to your heart
- Call your sponsor
- Find a meeting where you can share
