Sober Living by the Sea
One of the most wonderful things about living in Mount Pleasant is our sober home’s close proximity to the sea. Sober living by the sea provides an endless source of peace and reflection, reminding us of the power and beauty of nature all around us. The sea itself is in a constant state of renewal, just like we are. In a sense, we can look at the sea and apply its lessons to ourselves, the coming and going of the tides much like the ebb and flow of life itself.
An Anytime Meditation
Meditation is a useful technique that is often incorporated within structured sober living, with many benefits. Many of us, however, struggle with meditation when we first get sober. We often feel that the peace and stillness required to meditate is beyond our abilities, and we may not want to try because we think it’s going to be too hard. But meditation doesn’t have to mean that you sit quietly in a lotus position on the floor with incense burning. That works for some people, but for those of us who have trouble calming our minds, it might seem like an impossible task.
The sea is one of the most powerful meditative forces in the universe, and it’s right in our own backyard. The best part about it is, you don’t have to have any special knowledge or talent to reap its benefits. A good place to start is just by walking its beaches—or even just finding a place to stand or sit where you can immerse yourself in its sights, sounds and smells. Find clean and sober living wherever you go.
Sober Living Sea Meditation – How To
Now, many of you have experienced the sea at one time or another in your life. Hopefully, these were happy times that you can remember well. When you return to the ocean, you may be able to recall those feelings. Honor those good moments, and then let them go.
Let the salt air fill you with positive energy, and be aware of every sense:
- Of sound—the way the gulls cry, and the way the surf crashes against the shore
- Of scent—the salty, earthy smells that can only be found by the sea
- Of sight—notice the colors of the sky and the water, and every shade in between. See the colors change as the sun shifts in the sky. Notice the sea birds, dolphins, and other marine creatures on the shore.
Notice your breath as you take it in and let it out: just breathing in. Just breathing out. Notice the way that sounds carry on the breeze, and how they distort when the wind changes direction.
