Here are some of the most popular and fun sober activities in Charleston, SC and the surrounding area.
Discover Nature and Get Moving!
A walk or a bike ride through Palmetto Islands County Park is a great way to spend an afternoon. Rent a bicycle if you don’t have one, or just hike the nature trails and enjoy the views. Pedal boat rentals are also available if you feel like getting out on the water. The fifty-foot high observation tower is the highest point in the park, and from it you can see for miles around. There are docks that allow fishing, and it’s right next to the water park, beaches and boardwalk. Admission is only $2.
Brush Up on Local History
Learn a little about the regional history by visiting Boone Hall Plantation. With buildings that date back to 1743, acres of gardens and some of the oldest oak trees in the south, this heritage property symbolizes a bygone era. Take a tour of the mansion or ride an open-air coach around all 738 acres of the property. Eight original slave cabins still stand, and there are rose bushes in the gardens that are well over 100 years old. Admission is $24, including all exhibits, coach tours, garden tours, house tours and more.
Urban Treasure Hunting
Try geocaching! If you’ve never heard of geocaching, it could best be described as a high-tech treasure-hunting game played with GPS enabled devices. Using your GPS, you hunt for hidden containers, or caches, that contain various objects. There is a strong community around geocaching, and most are established around points of historical or recreational significance. Mt. Pleasant maintains four active geocaches: one on Patriot’s Point Trail, one at the Waterfront Memorial Park, one at Kearn’s Park and one at Hamlin Park Trail. Simply sign up for a free account on the official geocaching site, enter your location and away you go!
