The Timeline of Benefits When You Quit Drinking

Deciding to quit alcohol is a big step that can have massive impacts on your health. If you are thinking about quitting or already have, you are probably curious about what health improvements you might see. In this blog, we have compiled a checklist that you can keep to refer to for extra motivation.

Important Health Notice: If you’ve been drinking heavily or regularly, please consult with a healthcare provider before quitting. Alcohol withdrawal can be medically serious and potentially life-threatening in some cases. Professional supervision can ensure your safety during this critical transition.

A Timeline of Sober Benefits

The First 24 Hours

As soon as you drink your last alcoholic beverage, the timer begins. Within 24 hours, your body starts to detoxify. If you are used to drinking often you may notice some mild withdrawal symptoms, like anxiety, headaches, etc. But remember, positive changes are on the way.

Days 2-7 – The First Week Transformation

You should see some incredible changes if you have made it this far. Alcohol disrupts REM sleep, so if you drink often, you will feel exhausted no matter how much sleep you get. As your body adjusts to sobriety, one of the first things you may notice is how rested you feel. You should also feel more hydrated. Looking in the mirror should show clearer skin, reduced puffiness, and that sober glow.

The last change to look forward to is mental clarity. The fog should now begin to lift as the chemicals in your brain do their work to rebalance.

Weeks 2-4 – By Month One

From week two onward you should see even more changes. Alcohol causes inflammation, you may have noticed symptoms like bloating or heartburn when you were drinking often. This should now start to subside. And if you jump on the scale, you’ve more than likely dropped some weight–this could be four pounds or more.

If you take blood pressure medication, it may be time to see your doctor, as quitting after the first month can lead to a lower reading, which could affect your medication needs. But most exciting of all is the liver healing that will now begin.

Besides physical changes, you should also notice a difference in your bank account too.

Months 1-3 – The Real Healing

Now you’re in the swing of sobriety, and this is where the real benefits begin. Now that your neurotransmitters are beginning to normalize, you should see improved memory, clarity, and emotional stability. Better yet, your anxiety or depression should start to improve.

As your liver function improves, so does your immunity. A small cold will no longer knock you down and out. If you look in the mirror, you may notice that your under-eye circles are diminished, and your hair looks shinier and stronger.

6 Months and Beyond – Big Changes

By the time you hit half a year, you should start to see a big difference in your mental health. By now you have likely implemented better coping mechanisms and healthier routines. Your relationships have likely improved, or you’ve made new friends who fit into a healthier lifestyle. And best of all, your risk of developing alcohol-related diseases will continue to decrease with each passing month.

The One-Year Milestone and Long-Term Benefits

Reaching one year of sobriety is a big deal, a remarkable achievement that should be celebrated. If you made it this far, your chances of developing cancers, liver disease, and cardiovascular problems have dropped significantly. Long-term sobriety also helps your mind stay sharp as you get older.

Heavy drinkers by this stage could have saved up to $10,000 annually by staying sober. If you put all the pennies you would normally spend on alcohol into debt, a 401k, or savings account you should be feeling more financially secure than ever.
